Reactivity /Aggression Programs

Reactivity/

Aggression

What is it?

Why is my dog being aggressive on leash or towards visitors to the home?

Reactivity (barking/lunging/growling, etc.) and Aggression in dogs are all NORMAL behaviors.

Aggression/reactivity/fear/anxiety are typically complex emotional responses to stimuli in the environment

….but it’s more complex than what you might have been told elsewhere.

Let’s get one thing straight:

YOUR DOG IS NOT BAD’, ‘MEAN’, ‘AGGRESSIVE’, ‘REACTIVE’ - OR A MONSTER!!

Dogs will react differently to stimuli, depending on the breed. Some will be ‘triggered’ by one thing while another breed will hardly pay attention to it.

This is partly because we humans (for hundreds and thousands of years) have artificially selected for different reactions, behaviors, and specialized skills in different dog breeds so that they could perform certain jobs or functions that we needed the particular breed for, like herding, hunting, guarding, etc.

We just don’t need those skills anymore - so now we call them ‘problem behaviors’.

Think. about. that. for. a. moment.

Thus, when a dog is being ‘reactive’ it is not always a sign of fear, as you may have heard elsewhere.

A dog may be ‘reactive’ or ‘aggressive’ due to any of these factors:

His 4 L.E.G.S.® = past LEARNING, ENVIRONMENT, GENETICS, and his unique SELF, which include any of the following examples:

  • Perceived threat to his safety or territory/resources

  • Hazard Avoidance behavior

  • Lack of choice = Restricted in his choice or movement (by a leash or a fence)

  • Lack of proper socialization as a puppy.

  • Underlying health issues (pain, fear, anxiety, stress, disability, etc.)

  • Developmental stage/sex/status/age, etc.

  • Feeling cornered.

  • Constant manipulation of his body against his will (grooming, commands, being picked up, yanked, etc.)

  • Result of living in captivity.

  • Learned behavior pattern.

  • Not having his needs met (lack of mental and physical stimulation).

  • Mirroring human behavior (our emotional state, stress, frustration response, etc.)

  • And SO MUCH MORE….

As a dog parent experiencing this behavior issue in YOUR dog, we understand how frustrating and scary this behavior can be. This is why we have created two unique programs to address this very common issue in pet homes.

Over the past 100 years, our circumstances and the environment we live in has changed, and so has our dog’s, We no longer need our dog to exhibit many of the behaviors and skills he comes with in his DNA - but that of course does not mean it’s not still a part of his DNA.

The key point to understand is that before we can help YOUR dog, or any dog, we need to understand his 4 L.E.G.S.® (his Learning-Environment-Genetics-Self )- because all 4 influence your dog’s behavior all the time (24/7!)

Most people know t’s important to socialize puppies, especially in the socialization window between 8-16 weeks when they typically meet any new experience fearlessly…..as long as WE introduce them to things in a positive manner.

But even if you have done your homework with your puppy, your adult dog can still be triggered by something or someone in his environment that may cause him to REACT aggressively depending on his 4 LEGS:

His past LEARNING experiences, his past ENVIRONMENT, his GENETIC makeup, and his unique SELF (his overall health and well-being, his age, developmental stage, etc.)

As humans, we have an enormous responsibility to both take the time to understand how we may accidentally trigger or reinforce reactivity and aggression, especially if we do not have the right tools or understanding of how to help our dogs feel safe and navigate tricky situations confidently- but also what we can do to prevent and/or resolve this issue and to know what signs to look out for.

This is why EDUCATION is everything and you can be sure to get it from us here at The Dog Talker LLC!

The fact that you have landed here on our website means you have likely not had the right tools to work with, or that no one has taught you how to handle this behavior correctly. Maybe you have worked with a dog trainer or tried different remedies yourself.

No matter where you are on your journey with your dog’s Reactivity/Aggression, you have come to the right place:

The Dog Talker LLC is Charleston’s Leading Aggression and Dog Behavior Expert and our Signature Reactivity/Aggression Programs will help you get a better understanding of your dog’s problematic behavior and help you set your dog, your family, and your home up for success!

Your dog may be reactive due to a number of reasons….like, for example, lack of socialization as a puppy, not knowing how to navigate this modern life, living in captivity, unmet needs, past trauma, YOU not having the right tools to help him navigate, trigger stacking, fear, stress, frustration, learned behavior patterns, etc.

Most dogs are reactive/aggressive to other dogs or humans on walks when restricted by a leash, behind a fence (barrier frustration), sitting at the window. Others are reactive when strangers enter the home.

These are all NORMAL emotional reactions to what is happening TO or AROUND the dog.

How well a dog handles these situations is entirely dependent on each dog’s individual 4 L.E.G.S.® ( = what strategies (Learning) the dog has adopted so far to help her cope, what kinds of conditions she has lived under in the past (physical + social Environment) and in the present, what we may have bred the dog for (Genetics) and whether or not he has an outlet for some of these natural behaviors, and last but not least what kind of SELF the dog comes with in his baggage: His unique personality quirks and likes/dislikes, age, sex, and status - plus the dog’s overall health and welfare, any disabilities, fear, anxiety, etc. they may be struggling with.

The Dog Talker provides you with a thorough, in-depth understanding of what is going on from your dog’s perspective - your dog’s WHY - through the Initial Consultation/LEGS Assessment.

This understanding helps us to start at POINT CERO = A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR DOG - where we can begin anew in order to help you & your dog navigate life much better together.

Let’s take your dog out of the BOX he has been in for decades

and unwrap the TRUTH:

We start at POINT CERO = UNDERSTANDING

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Success in any of our programs is entirely dependent on YOUR commitment and dedication to wanting to help your dog(s) and to doing your homework. If you follow my recommendations and instructions and you use the tools you are given, you can, in most cases, expect to see progress within 1-2 sessions.

Behavior is not static, and no two dogs are the same - so to continue to see progress, you have to be willing to keep practicing and working with your dog even after a program is completed.

At the end of our program, you will have a much better understanding of your dog’s WHY and HOW to continue to help him/her navigate tricky situations much better.

It does not mean your dog will ‘magically’ stop having emotions or stop reacting to things in his environment. It means YOU now can help him handle things BETTER.

Just remember, YOU also react to things 24/7. But you too can learn to handle things better.

Each case is different and depends on the severity of the issues we are working on, as well as your level of commitment. Most clients should be able to continue on their own after investing in a program, but in more severe cases, you might have to invest in follow-up sessions until you reach your goals.

Remember one thing: Success is ALWAYS dependent on YOUR level of commitment and willingness to learn and change YOUR behavior!!!

  • Working with me, Charleston’s first Licensed Family Dog Mediator®, you can be sure you & your dog are in the best, most qualified hands.

I have gone through extensive education and training in aggressive behavior in dogs and have the necessary knowledge and skills in applied ethology and Family Dog Mediation®, which is a step above and beyond dog training, to help you understand your dog better.

We work more with the human side of the equation, helping humans learn to change THEIR behavior and communication, rather than changing the dog’s behavior, which is not always necessary.

We put WELFARE FIRST ALWAYS - because without it, you cannot improve your dog’s life and behavior.

You will not find anything like our specialized programs anywhere else in Charleston.

The fact that we work exclusively with Resource Guarding and Reactivity means you get expertise, knowledge, and skills from us that go far beyond dog training.

    It’s that simple.

    1. Education & understanding

    2. Enhancing the human-canine bond through REAL, ORGANIC communication and relationship building.

    3. Enabling free choice and agency for our dogs in captivity

    4. Meeting our human and canine clients where they are.

    5. Innovative, practical solutions to common dog behavior problems

    6. Positive Reinforcement/FEAR FREE.

    7. NO commands. NO aversive/punitive methods. NO collars (shock/prong/choke, etc.)

    8. The only tool we sometimes use is a clicker (you will get one from us)
